I just got back from a vacation in the Poconos, my old stomping grounds. I went to East Stroudsburg University, and like many college students, just loved the whole experience and thought I wanted to live there permanently. While that did not come to be, I still enjoy visiting that part of the state. We did some hiking at Glen Onoko Falls in Lehigh Gorge State Park in Jim Thorpe, which offers spectacular views, making the challenge well worth the effort. We also floated down the Delaware, swam in the local lakes, saw lots of deer, and got caught up on some reading. It was a nice change of pace from vacationing at the shore.
These past few days I have been spending way too much time watching the Summer Olympics, but I keep telling myself they only come around every 4 years. Michael Phelps has been phenomenal, and I am looking forward to seeing Dara Torres compete as well. Watching all of these great athletes makes me think about the commitment they must have made in order to be among the best in the world, and it certainly motivates me to want to achieve the goals I have set for myself.
With summer winding down, Chris, Dan, Deirdre, Julie, and myself are all looking forward to getting our clients back into their exercise routines and re-focused on their health and fitness goals. Enjoy the rest of your summer, and go Michael!
Want to live a long life? Run
from WASHINGTON (Reuters) By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Editor – Mon Aug 11, 2008
People who want to live a long and healthy life might want to take up running. A study published on Monday shows middle-aged members of a runner’s club were half as likely to die over a 20-year period as people who did not run.
Running reduced the risk not only of heart disease, but of cancer and neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s, researchers at Stanford University in California found.
“19 years (into the study), 15 percent of runners had died compared with 34 percent of controls,” Dr. Eliza Chakravarty and colleagues wrote in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
Any type of vigorous exercise will likely do the trick, said Stanford’s Dr. James Fries, who worked on the study. “Both common sense and background science support the idea that there is nothing magical about running per se,” Fries said in a telephone interview. “It is the regular physical vigorous activity that is important.”
You can read the entire article here (it’s relatively short). Some other interesting findings:
- People who took up exercise when they were older also improved their health.
- The study showed that people cannot use the risk of injury as an excuse not to run — the runners had fewer injuries of all kinds, including to their knees.
